Everything Jake.
By Mike Rosenzweig

Sunday Reads

Superhero U

The first instinct Jake felt was to cry. His lips quivered a moment, then he regained control of himself. There was no crying in self-defense class. "Get your ass up from the ground, Bruno. Now."

TWO HOURS AGO:
"He actually said that to you?" Mercy asked, after taking one last drag of her Parliament Menthol. Jake nodded, and tossed his butt to the ground and stomped it out.

"I have no idea why. I mean, I'm not doing that badly, am I?"

"Not that I can see, Jake. You got off to a bad start by missing the first four or five classes, and I guess Jenkins is the kind of guy to hold a grudge."

"He's the kind of guy who would hold a grudge against his grandmother if she put too much syrup in his chocolate milk. Seriously, Merce, he's a cock."

"Why haven't you dropped this class then? It's obvious that you really don't want to take it anyway."

"Do you really think I have a choice?"

"What do you mean by that?"

"It's just… I was enrolled in this class… my uncle pulled a few strings to get me in this class."

"Really?"

"Yes."

"That's funny."

"Why, Mercy?"

"Hey children! Merry be!"

Jake and Mercy roll their eyes at the greeting of their classmate. Arthur smiled as he walked up to them. He smacked Jake on the back, a friendly gesture, but it still almost knocked Jake down. This made Arthur smile even more. "You two smell like an ass tray. Get it? Ass… ass tray? Instead of ash, I said--"

"We get it, Artie."

"You don't have to be curt, Mercedes."

"You don't have to be annoying, Artie."

"Watch it Bruno, the pretty boy act might be fly with the ladies, but I'm on to you. Oh, yes. I'm on to you."

"What the hell are you talking about?"

"On to you, Bruno. On. To. You." Artie smiles again, and then throws a very big wink at Mercy, which makes her roll her eyes and become slightly nauseous. "I'll see you in class, Mercedes."

Arthur moves himself into the gym and the door creaks to a close behind him. Jake tries not to laugh. Mercy just shakes your head. "I think he likes you."

"Of course he does, I'm hot."

"Right."

"You don't think I'm hot Jake?"

"That's a stupid question, Mercy. What time is it?"

"About five to."

"We got time for one more?"

"You know it."
